the Bard of Bath

As part of an ancient Celtic tradition, the City of Bath each year elects a poet, singer/song-writer or storyteller to represent the city and promote its arts scene. As in the more famous Welsh National Eisteddfod, the chosen Bard receives a ceremonial blue

The current 8th Bard of Bath, Helen Moore, is now opening the competition to select her successor, who, according to tradition, will take over the role at the Winter Solstice.

The theme for this year’s competition is THE EARTH
Helen welcomes any well-crafted poems, stories or lyrical songs on this theme. This should be accompanied by a 200 word statement on why you’d like to take up the role, what you might bring to this honorary post and how you would promote the Bardic tradition in Bath and beyond.

If you’d like to enter the competition, your entry plus 200 word statement should arrive by 1st December at this address:

BARD OF BATH COMPETITION,
91, Charlton,
Radstock,
BA3 5TN.

Entrants will be invited to perform their work at a special gathering with performances by other bards (W.O.A.D.) to be held on:
19th December at St. Mark’s, Widcombe – starting 7pm sharp!

The winner will be elected by a panel of judges on the basis of their entry, performance and level of initiative for the post. Please note, the competition is open to anyone regardless of gender, race, culture or faith, although the chosen Bard will need to have an understanding of the Celtic tradition from which the role originates. Candidates should also live in Bath or its outlying post codes areas.
